MCPD Compliance Guide — Agriemach
Any engine that uses fuel where the rated thermal input is within the range of 1MWth to 50MWth. Diesel and gas engine generators rated above 400kWe are also included.
A plant may consist of a single generator or a series of generators located at the same site, with the same operator, providing electricity for the same purpose.

Controls apply to all new plant and generators installed from this date
From 2024
Existing plants in the >5MWth – <50MWth range must comply
From 2029
Remaining plants in the >1MWth – <5MWth range must comply
The MCPD will affect all Medium Combustion Plants with the following exceptions:
Generators in installations permitted under Chapter III or II of the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED)
Generators on a nuclear site with a defined emergency or safety role
Backup generators on any other site providing they are not tested for more than 50 hours per annum and cannot supply electricity to the National Grid or operate in the balancing market
The Medium Combustion Plant Directive (MCPD) was transposed into UK law on the 30th January 2018 and introduces a Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) limit of 190mg/Nm³@15%O₂ to all combustion plant and generators in the 1–50MWth range, in England and Wales.
The directive is designed to regulate emissions of SO₂, NOx and dust released into the air, with the sole aim of reducing these harmful substances known to be hazardous to human health and the environment.
